An analysis of team-wise batting and bowling performances in IPL 2011 so far

Since his entry, they have scored at a run-rate of 10.40 in the first six overs as compared to 5.54 before. In just seven innings, he has scored 196 runs in boundaries in the first six-over period which is second only to Paul Valthaty’s 202 runs in 11 innings.It is interesting to note how teams have approached an innings. Mumbai and Chennai have been fairly cautious and have scored at under seven runs per over in the first six overs. Chennai have accelerated during the middle overs and finish with a flourish in the end. Bangalore, on the other hand, have built on their explosive starts and scored at over ten runs per over in the last six overs too. Rajasthan’s batting woes can be understood from the fact that they have not been able to dominate during any phase of the innings.Although Gayle has been brilliant in the middle overs too, it is Shaun Marsh who has hit the most runs in fours and sixes in the period. Marsh has 168 runs with 24 fours and 12 sixes while Gayle has hit 144 runs with 15 fours and 14 sixes.Despite being eliminated, Delhi performed quite well on the batting front. Three batsmen including Virender Sehwag scored over 300 runs. Chennai’s batsmen have been remarkably consistent with four batsmen scoring over 300 runs. Punjab and Bangalore are the two teams who have two batsmen each with over 400 runs in IPL 2011.Of the five centuries scored in the tournament, Gayle has scored two. Chennai batsmen have scored 15 half-centuries which is the highest among all teams. S Badrinath leads the tally with five half-centuries.There are three batsmen from Chennai and Punjab who score at a strike rate over 130 (min 250 runs scored). Gayle, with a remarkable strike rate of 201.85, is the only Bangalore batsman on the list.Chennai and Mumbai have the best win-loss record when they bat first. Bangalore though are the best in chases with six wins. Kohli and Gayle are the top scorers in chases with 298 and 280 runs respectively.**

They concede over eight runs per over in the first six-over period and nearly ten per over in the final six-over phase. Rajasthan have the worst run-rate difference (-1.98) in this period while Bangalore have the best (1.30). Chennai and Bangalore have a run-rate difference of 1.86 and 1.62 respectively in the final six overs. Punjab (-1.55) and Deccan (-1.44) have the worst run-rate differences in the same period of the innings. Lasith Malinga has by far been the most successful bowler in the IPL with 27 wickets. Chennai and Mumbai have been the best bowling teams, and have two bowlers each in the top five and three bowlers each with ten or more wickets.While Mumbai and Rajasthan have three bowlers each with an economy rate under seven (minimum 30 overs bowled), Delhi and Punjab have none. Rahul Sharma, who boasts the best economy rate of 5.24, has been superb throughout. He has conceded over seven runs per over on only one occasion and under five per over in four completed spells of four overs. Mumbai have the best dot-ball percentage followed by Kochi while Bangalore have the lowest. Among bowlers who have bowled at least 30 overs, Malinga has the best dot-ball percentage (54.25) followed by Praveen Kumar (51.66). The best spinner in terms of dot-ball percentage is Shane Warne (44.18%).**
