Arsenal legend Ian Wright has taken aim at Mesut Ozil following the midfielder’s criticism of ex-players.
The German World Cup winner came under fire for his performance in the Gunners’ 4-0 defeat to Liverpool prior to the international break.
Ozil was not the only member of the squad to face criticism, but considering that he is deemed one of the better players at Arsene Wenger’s disposal, more is expected from him.
It is not the first time that the 28-year-old has been subjected to strong critique, and it seems as though he is getting exasperated by it.
In a lengthy Facebook post, Ozil hit out at former Arsenal players who have questioned his effort and commitment, urging them to get behind the team rather than attack it.
Wright, who played for the North London club between 1991 and 1998, has been one of those former professionals to target Ozil.
The TV pundit has responded to the player’s claims by suggesting that the German cannot condemn his critics until he signs a new contract.
Wright told BBC Radio 5 Live:
“Sign a contract, if you feel that strongly about people criticising the team because you’re somebody who is integral to Arsenal’s success.
“You’re not signing a deal and you’re probably going to continue to hide behind the fact that [Alexis] Sanchez is the one that everybody’s going to say, ‘Is he going to go?’.
“Why haven’t you signed yet? That’s what I would say to you. If you feel that strongly, why haven’t you signed yet? A player that is not actually performing on the pitch is coming out, calling people out and he’s not signing a contract. It’s laughable.”
Ozil’s current deal expires at the end of this season.
