When writing his column in the Yorkshire Evening Post, David Prutton has made a strong statement regarding Leeds United’s promotion hopes.
The Whites had looked destined for automatic promotion last month, but a run of picking up just one point from nine available has seen them resigned to the playoffs.
What’s been said then?
The 37-year-old has backed his former club to get the job done despite their dip in form in recent weeks.
Prutton wrote that the Yorkshire club have the right mindset to have a successful playoff campaign.
“A couple of weeks ago we presumed that we were looking at a Leeds team that had automatic promotion or were very much in the box seat for it.
“Now they are going to have to go the scenic route and work out the hard way to get in the Premier League.
“But I have got no doubt that Leeds have got the personality and the bottle to do it.”
Personality and bottle
For Prutton to have ‘no doubt’ that Leeds have the personality and bottle to get promoted, he must know something that everyone else doesn’t.
Marcelo Bielsa’s side have undoubted quality, but the one thing that you can call into question is the team’s ability to produce the goods when it matters.
Leeds have shown mental resilience when scoring several late goals this season, but when it came down to it, the squad capitulated.
Their fate was in their own hands with just four games to go, but they lost 2-1 to a 10 man (10-man) Wigan side at home despite the Latics having the worst away record in the league.
This result was followed up by a 2-0 loss at Griffin Park which resigned the team to the playoffs.
The wheels well and truly came off when Leeds’ grit was tested this season. They still haven’t won a match since that disastrous game on Good Friday so the question remains as to how they will recover.
